Quinta Azenha do Ramalho is a luxurious self-catering house set on the unique, private one hectare rural setting of Vale Lourenço, a mountain valley exceptional for its beauty and nature. This distinctive and secluded holiday home is within the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede in the North Alentejo area of rural Portugal bordering the Extremadura region of Spain.
The quinta's four double bedrooms, three with twin beds, is ideal for groups of friends as well as families who want to visit São Mamede for country walking in the many routes nearby or exploring the Parque's historic and cultural sites such as Marvão, Castelo de Vide and Portalegre. This is an exceptional part of unspoilt Portugal, full of character, barely touched by tourism and steeped in history. From the dramatic medieval hilltop villages of Marvão and Castelo de Vide and the many roman and megalithic sites, to the cobbled lanes that wind through cork oak woods and over panoramic rocky ridges giving views that stretch for miles. In Spring the wildflowers carpet the hillsides and olive groves and the eagles and storks flying high overhead are a common sight.
We do not have a swimming pool at the Quinta however the mountain stream in the grounds is an ideal playground for both children and adults. Hours of endless fun paddling and dam building or just laze in the hammock and watch the fun. If you do want to swim there are many pools in the area and the nearest pool is only 6km away. Quinta Azenha do Ramalho is a peaceful rural retreat in the midst of this spectacular countryside. Quality holiday accommodation in a distinctive part of Portugal's Alentejo. Detach from the busy world and listen to the sounds of nature, birdsong, distant goat bells and the soothing gurgle of the adjoining mountain stream. A truly unspoilt natural environment and an ideal holiday destination. To get away from it all, come here.
Walking in the hills of São Mamede. At the Quinta we provide maps and detailed route notes for 9 walks. They are graded easy to moderate and range in distance from 7 to 14 kms. The walks take you along cobbled medieval roads and through wooded areas of cork oak and chestnut to rocky ridges with views that go on for ever. Vineyards and olive groves line the routes and in spring the profusion of coloured wild flowers carpet the countryside. Some of the walks take you through Marvao and Castelo de Vide which are among Portugal's prettiest medieval villages. The climate is great for walking with the exception of July and August, even in winter there are many sunny days which are just perfect for hiking. Few tourists and walkers have discovered this beautiful, secluded and unspoilt area of Portugal making it a perfect place for a relaxing walking holiday.

We found the best
way to see the region was by following one of the excellent walks provided. To be able to walk in ancient landscapes, down cobbled tracks
with only the sound of birds and the occasional goat or sheep bell is a rare treat in this day and age. Each walk was full of colour,
plants, wildlife and history and all different with some unique sights.
