Hiking in Portugal in Alegrete in the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede

Distance 10.6 Km Grade Medium
Time 3.5 hours Type Circular walk
Rambling by an olive grove looking south to Alegrete on the Alegrete walk

Beginning at Fonte Nova on the north eastern outskirts of Alegrete the path winds up a little skirting pine and some eucalyptus before descending fairly steeply down a track into a more pastoral setting of farmland with grazing sheep.

Across the Ribeira da Arronches and cultivated fields, through hamlets with quaint alentejan one story houses, vineyards and farms near Besteiros. Then back over the Ribeira da Arronches again but this time alongside a rocky gorge whose sound betrays a hidden waterfall. Finally along lanes and paths and fields and olive groves back to Alegrete.

Crossing the Ribeira da Arronches a few kilometres downstream from the Quinta A very old knarled cork oak
Trincadeira grape in red schistous soil A glimpse across olive groves towards Alegrete castle

A 1/25000 scale walking map is provided showing the walking route.
