Walking in Portugal in Carreiras in the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede

Distance 9.3 Km Grade Easy to Moderate
Time 3.5 hours Type Circular walk

This hike follows a medieval road from Castelo de Vide to the hilltop village of Carreiras. The walk descends steeply from 700 metres at the highest point to 495 metres at its lowest along the south easterly side of the São Mamede mountain range where the park meets the Alentejo plain.

The route traverses a granite landscape and some very significant woodland areas of cork oak, oak, chestnut and olive trees. White broom, heather and lavender enhance the pathways. Look out for the various vantage points en route and savour the magnificent views.

The cobblestone patterns of the paved mediaeval paths on this route are identical to those found in the oldest part of Castelo de Vide from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Enjoy the village of Carreiras situated at an altitude of 600 metres with its 16th century church.

A 1/25000 scale walking map is provided showing the walking route.
