The roman bridge in Portagem below Marvão in the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede, Portugal

Beginning and ending at the Largo das Almas (the Square of the Souls) in the village of Portagem. This walk passes the roman bridge where travellers in medieval times were charged a toll to cross the river (portagem means toll in Portuguese). Continue along past small farms with olive, cherry and chestnut trees. Pass through wooded areas of cork oak and chestnut and slowly follow the steep medieval cobbled track to Marvão .

On a clear day you can see across the rocky wild granite landscape towards the mountains of Serra da Estrela. Choose to either extend the walk and explore the World Heritage site of Marvão or leave this delight for another day and descend towards Portagem on steep cobbled lanes.
